Eat Processed Meat may Increase Risk of Heart Disease and Diabetes

TEMPO Interactive, Harvard - In a new study, researchers from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) has found that eating processed meat sausage associated with increased risk of terkema 42% higher risk of heart disease and 19% higher in type 2 diabetes. Conversely, the researchers found no higher risk of heart disease or diabetes among those who consumed red meat that has not been processed, such as beef, pork, or lamb. This work represents the first systematic review about the connection between eating red meat and processed meat raw with the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

According to the researchers, who have not been processed red meat was defined as a processed meat from beef, lamb or pork, does not include poultry. The processed meat defined as meat preserved by smoking, or salting, or by the addition of chemical preservatives; example bacon, salami, sausages, hot dogs.

This study appears in the journal Circulation, May 17, 2010 online edition.

Renata Micha, a member of the department of epidemiology research HSPH and lead author of the study, said most of the previous research also considers the health effects of eating red meat raw versus processed meat.

"To reduce the risk of heart attacks and diabetes, one must consider the type of meat they eat. Meat preparations such as bacon, salami, sausages, hot dogs, perhaps most important to avoid," says Micha.
