Foreign investment in Indonesia Menara not profitable

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta - Vice Secretary General of the Association of Telecom Tower Infrastructure Development (APITEL), Tagor Sihombing, said there is absolutely no benefit if the foreign ownership of telecommunications towers for sector is allowed up to a majority. "If it was opened to foreign help to ya no nothing. But for this sector there is absolutely no benefit to Indonesia," said Tagor in Jakarta, Friday (12 / 3).

According to Tagor, during this domestic capacity is still able to take part in this sector, both in technology development of a strong tower structure and funding. Funding is divided into a national company's capital plus loan application at national banks. "Once it was there players (investors) foreign technology to build a telecommunications tower, but the same thing and also funds from BRI credit," said Tagor.

For one tower required an investment of around USD 1-2 billion, depending on the function for how the operator. "At this time of the initial strength of the tower planned for the three operators (tower together) but for more than three tower operators need reinforcement so investment is more expensive," said Tagor.

There should struggle so that foreign ownership is limited by restrictions on Investment Negative List (DNI). Because technology and design to build a telecommunications tower was more simple. "We (the government and Indonesian businessmen) have to see what is brought by foreign investors, whether domestic players can not afford, and what types of technologies bring," said Tagor.

Last week, the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Gita Wirjawan declared foreign ownership of telecommunications towers for sector is allowed up to a majority in the draft revised Investment Negative List (DNI). The reason is needed about U.S. $ 7-8 billion to optimize the capacity of domestic industries are not strong enough.

Currently, there are 48 companies developing telecommunication towers. Only three of the big companies (Indonesia Tower, Tower PT Protelindo and the Joint Group) and about 15 medium scale companies. Large-scale companies can build more than 100 towers. Medium-size companies are able to build around 100 to 100 towers.

While the potential development of the telecommunications sector is still very large tower, so it is attracting foreign investors and domestic. This new sector flown approximately 60 percent. Moderate in most densely populated countries already have so many towers can not grow much.

In addition, there is a problem of sensitivity in a climate of investment in telecommunications tower after the overthrow of many cases of telecommunications towers, like in Badung, Bali. "The opportunity to develop this business is still huge, especially if the investment climate is conducive," said Tagor.
