How Olive Oil Against Heart Disease

TEMPO Interactive, Barcelona - Everyone knows the olive oil and Mediterranean diet could reduce cardiovascular disease risk. Mediterranean-style diet is a diet of southern Europe, like Spain and Greece. But new research report offers a surprising reason: the food is changing the function of genes associated with atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

This report is published junal FASEB July 2010 print edition.

"Knowing the genes that can be influenced by a healthy diet, can help people choose a healthy diet," said Maria Isabel Covas, D. Pharm., Ph.D., a researcher involved in this work from the Nutrition Research Group and Cardiovascular Risk in Barcelona, Spain. "This is the first step for future therapy with nutritional food choices."

The scientists worked with three groups of healthy volunteers. The first group consumed a traditional Mediterranean menu with a genuine olive oil rich in polyphenols. The second group consumed a traditional Mediterranean diet with olive oil polyphenols low. The third group followed their dietary habits.

After three months, the first group have low regulation in atherosclerosis-related gene expression in their peripheral blood mononuclear cells. In addition, the polyphenol-rich olive oil have a significant impact on the expression of genetic changes that affect coronary heart disease.

The results also indicate that consumption of virgin olive oil (pure), in conjunction with the Mediterranean diet, can have a positive impact for insulin resistance, inflammation, carcinogenesis, and tumor suppression.

According to Gerald Weissmann, editor in chief FASEB Journal, this study shows that olive oil and Mediterranean diet affects our bodies in ways that are far more important than previously believed.
